In short
A word is any run of letters or digits, so contractions and hyphenated terms count once. Reading time is words ÷ 200 per minute; speaking time words ÷ 130. For SEO, a focus keyword at 0.5–1.5% density is typical; above 3% reads as keyword stuffing.
Who this is for: Writers, students, SEO editors and social media managers checking length, reading time and keyword density.
How the counts are made
- Words are runs of letters or digits in any script (Latin, Arabic, Urdu, Devanagari…), so "don't" and "e-invoice" each count once and Urdu text counts correctly.
- Sentences end at . ! ? or the Urdu/Arabic full stop (۔). Abbreviations like "e.g." will slightly over-count.
- Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.
- Reading time uses 200 words per minute, the usual adult silent-reading average (Medium uses 265 for technical readers; 150–180 suits second-language readers). Speaking time uses 130 wpm, a comfortable presentation pace.
- Keyword density is each word's share of the total, with common stop words removed. For SEO, a primary keyword at 0.5–1.5% is typical; above 3% reads as stuffing.

Assumptions
- Words are runs of Unicode letters or digits (apostrophes and hyphens inside a word are kept).
- Sentences end at . ! ? or ۔; paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
- Reading time uses the wpm you set (default 200); speaking time uses 130 wpm; keyword density excludes a short English stop-word list.
Worked example
1,500 words ÷ 200 wpm = 7 min 30 sec reading time; spoken at 130 wpm it would be an 11½-minute talk. If "gratuity" appears 18 times, its density is 18 ÷ 1,500 = 1.2% — in the normal range for a focus keyword.
Frequently asked questions
Does it count the same way as Microsoft Word?
Very close. Word counts any run of non-space characters, so stand-alone punctuation or an em dash between spaces adds to Word's count but not this one. Differences are typically under 1%.
What are common word limits?
IELTS Task 2: at least 250 words. University essays usually allow ±10% of the stated limit. Google Ads headlines: 30 characters; descriptions: 90. A tweet: 280 characters.
Does it work for Urdu, Arabic or Chinese?
Urdu and Arabic count correctly by word. Chinese and Japanese are written without spaces, so the word count is not meaningful for them — use the character count instead.
Is my text saved?
No. Counting happens in your browser as you type; the page makes no network request with your text.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
About 650 words at a comfortable 130 words per minute; 750 if you speak quickly.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
Roughly two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced at 12 pt.
