In short

Pakistan salary income tax is charged in progressive slabs set each year by the Finance Act, with income up to PKR 600,000 exempt and the top rate 35%. Tax is deducted monthly by the employer; the tax year runs 1 July to 30 June.

How Pakistan salary income tax is calculated

Pakistan uses a slab (progressive) system for salaried individuals: income up to a threshold is tax-free, and each higher slab is taxed at a higher marginal rate, with a fixed base amount carried forward from the previous slab. Slabs and rates are set annually in the Finance Act and apply for the tax year running 1 July to 30 June.

This calculator uses annual taxable income (monthly salary × 12) to find the correct slab, then applies: tax = base amount + (rate × income above the slab floor).

Assumptions

  • Uses the salaried-individual slabs in the rules file, which are marked unverified until confirmed against the current Finance Act.
  • Monthly input is annualised (×12) before the slabs are applied, then divided back.
  • No deductions, tax credits or other income are considered.

Worked example (illustrative — verify current slabs)

PKR 150,000 per month

Annual income = PKR 1,800,000
Falls in the 11% bracket (PKR 1,200,000–2,200,000): tax = 6,000 + 11% × (1,800,000 − 1,200,000) = PKR 72,000/year
≈ PKR 6,000/month

Frequently asked questions

Are these the current tax year's slabs?

This tool is published with the most recently known slabs at build time. Always check the banner at the top of this page — if it says the slabs are unverified, confirm the current figures at fbr.gov.pk before relying on the result.

Does this include tax credits or deductions?

No — this is a straightforward slab calculation on gross taxable salary. It does not account for tax credits (such as for pension contributions or charitable donations), which can reduce your final liability.

Is a non-filer taxed differently?

Certain withholding tax rates differ for non-filers on transactions like property and vehicle purchases, but salary income tax slabs themselves apply the same way. Filing your return has other benefits and is separate from this calculation.

How is salary tax deducted in Pakistan?

Employers withhold tax monthly under Section 149 based on the annual slabs and pay it to FBR; you claim any adjustment when filing your return.

Do I need to file a return if tax is already deducted?

Yes if your income exceeds the threshold or you meet other filing conditions — filing also keeps you on the Active Taxpayer List, which lowers withholding rates elsewhere.
