In short

The 2026 HSA contribution limit is $4,400 for self-only and $8,750 for family HDHP coverage, plus $1,000 at age 55+, including employer contributions, pro-rated by months of coverage unless the last-month rule applies. Payroll contributions avoid income tax and 7.65% FICA; growth and medical withdrawals are tax-free, making the HSA the most tax-efficient account available.

Who this is for: US employees and self-employed people on a high-deductible health plan.

Not tax or legal advice. Federal rules; state treatment and employer plan details vary. Check eligibility (HDHP, no other coverage, not on Medicare) before contributing.

2026 HSA rules

2026Self-onlyFamily
Contribution limit$4,400$8,750
Catch-up, age 55++$1,000+$1,000 (per spouse, in separate HSAs)
HDHP minimum deductible$1,700$3,400
HDHP maximum out-of-pocket$8,500$17,000
  • Employer contributions count towards the same limit.
  • Partial years are pro-rated by month — unless you are covered on 1 December, when the last-month rule allows the full limit if you stay covered through the next year.
  • Payroll contributions also avoid Social Security and Medicare tax; direct contributions get the income-tax deduction only.
  • Invest it: paying current medical bills from cash and letting the HSA grow is the highest-value retirement account available — withdrawals for medical costs are never taxed, and receipts can be reimbursed years later.
  • Excess contributions are taxed 6% a year until removed; California and New Jersey tax HSA contributions and earnings at state level.

Assumptions

  • Limit = 2026 self/family limit + $1,000 catch-up at 55+, × months of coverage ÷ 12; room = limit − employer − contributed so far.
  • Tax saved = contribution × (marginal federal rate + 7.65% FICA + state rate), assuming payroll contributions.
  • Growth = contribution × (1 + return)^years; annual-max projection uses the future value of an annuity.

Worked example

Family coverage, age 40, 12 months, employer puts in $1,000, nothing contributed yet, 26 paychecks, single, $70,000 taxable income, 5% state, invested at 6% for 25 years

Limit $8,750; room after the employer's $1,000 = $7,750, or $298 per paycheck. Contributing it saves about $2,685 this year (22% federal + 7.65% FICA + 5% state) — $7,750 in the account for $5,065 out of pocket. Left invested, that single year grows to about $33,300 tax-free; maxing every year for 25 years would build roughly $480,000.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HSA contribution limit for 2026?

$4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, plus $1,000 if you are 55 or older — including anything your employer contributes.

Can I contribute to an HSA if I changed plans mid-year?

Yes — the limit is pro-rated by months of HDHP coverage, unless you are covered on 1 December and use the last-month rule.

Is an HSA better than a 401(k)?

For medical spending it is the only account with no tax at any stage; most planners say capture the 401(k) match first, then max the HSA, then the rest of the 401(k).

What happens to my HSA if I leave my job?

It is yours — the balance stays, can be moved to another provider, and can still be spent on medical costs; you just cannot add to it without HDHP coverage.

Can I contribute to an HSA without an employer?

Yes, directly, if you have qualifying HDHP coverage; you deduct it on your return (no FICA saving that way).

Can I use an HSA for my spouse or children?

Yes — qualified medical expenses of your spouse and dependants are covered even if they are not on your HDHP.
