Fuel Cost Calculator — Trip, Per km & Monthly Commute
Work out the fuel cost of a trip or your monthly commute from distance, your car's km/l or l/100km and the petrol price — in PKR, AED, SAR, pounds or any currency, with per-person sharing.

In short
Fuel cost = distance ÷ km per litre × price per litre. A 1300 cc sedan at 14 km/l doing a 750 km Lahore–Islamabad return trip uses about 54 litres — PKR 14,500 at PKR 270 a litre, or PKR 4,500 per person for four. Real-world consumption runs 10–20% above the brochure figure in city traffic.
Who this is for: Drivers budgeting a trip or commute, and groups splitting fuel costs, in any currency.
How fuel cost is calculated
litres = distance ÷ km per litre, then cost = litres × price per litre. Economy units are converted first: litres per 100 km → km/l = 100 ÷ L/100km; UK miles per gallon → km/l = mpg × 1.609 ÷ 4.546 (an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres; US gallons are 3.785).
- Typical economy: 660–1000 cc hatchbacks (Alto, Cultus, Mira) 16–20 km/l; 1300–1800 cc sedans (Corolla, Civic, City) 11–14 km/l; SUVs and pickups 7–10 km/l; hybrids 20–25 km/l; motorcycles 35–50 km/l.
- Typical distances: Lahore–Islamabad 375 km via M-2; Karachi–Hyderabad 165 km; Dubai–Abu Dhabi 140 km; Riyadh–Dammam 400 km; Jeddah–Makkah 80 km; London–Manchester 335 km.
- Not included: wear, tyres, servicing and depreciation — a full per-km cost is typically 2–3× the fuel-only figure, which matters when comparing driving with a flight or train.

Assumptions
- Litres = distance ÷ km/l; mpg converted via imperial gallons (4.546 l) and 1.609 km/mile; l/100km inverted.
- Return doubles the distance; commute multiplies the return trip by working days.
- Tolls added to the trip cost and split per person; wear and depreciation excluded.
Worked example
750 km ÷ 14 = 53.6 litres × PKR 270 = PKR 14,464 fuel; plus PKR 3,700 tolls = PKR 18,164 for the trip, PKR 4,541 each for four people — compared with about PKR 6,000–8,000 per person by air-conditioned coach.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my car's km per litre?
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally, fill again and divide the km driven by the litres added. Two or three cycles give a reliable average.
Does air-conditioning really use that much fuel?
Around 5–10% more in city driving, less on the motorway. Open windows at speed cost about the same through drag.
How much does the monthly commute really cost?
Use the commute mode with the return distance: a 25 km each-way commute at 12 km/l and PKR 270 is about PKR 24,750 a month in fuel alone.
Does it work for diesel, CNG or electricity?
For diesel and petrol, yes. For CNG enter km per kg and the price per kg; for electric cars enter km per kWh and the tariff per kWh — the arithmetic is identical.
How much does it cost to drive from Lahore to Islamabad?
About PKR 7,000–7,500 in fuel one way for a 1300 cc car at 14 km/l and PKR 270 a litre, plus the M-2 toll.
How do I convert mpg to km per litre?
Multiply UK mpg by 0.354 (US mpg by 0.425): 40 mpg UK ≈ 14.2 km/l.
