In short
The EOBI pension is the average insurable wage × 2% × years of insurable employment, subject to the minimum pension (PKR 11,500 as most recently reported), payable from age 60 for men and 55 for women after at least 15 years of contributions; contributions are 5% employer and 1% employee of the minimum wage (PKR 37,000).
Who this is for: Private-sector employees in Pakistan estimating their EOBI pension and employers checking contributions.
How the EOBI pension is calculated
Under the Employees' Old-Age Benefits Act 1976, the monthly pension is:
pension = average insurable wage × 2% × years of insurable employment, subject to the minimum pension set by the government (PKR 11,500 as most recently reported).
- Insurable wage is the wage on which contributions were paid — by default the federal minimum wage (PKR 37,000), so a worker with 25 years' service gets 37,000 × 2% × 25 = PKR 18,500.
- Contributions: employer 5% and employee 1% of the minimum wage, paid monthly through the EOBI portal (PKR 1,850 + 370 at PKR 37,000).
- Eligibility: age 60 for men and 55 for women with at least 15 years of insurable employment; a reduced pension is available 5 years earlier (0.5% reduction per month early); with under 15 years the worker gets an old-age grant equal to one month's wage per year of service instead.
- Survivor's pension: the spouse receives the full pension for life; dependent children until 18.
Every registered establishment with one or more employees must enrol staff; workers can check their contribution record on the EOBI website with their CNIC.
Assumptions
- Pension = wage base × 2% × years, floored at the minimum pension; eligibility requires 15 years.
- Contributions = 5% employer + 1% employee of the wage base; total contributed = monthly × 12 × years at today's base.
- Retirement at 60 (men) / 55 (women); early-pension reduction factors are not applied.
Worked example
Formula pension = 37,000 × 2% × 25 = PKR 18,500 a month — above the PKR 11,500 minimum, so the formula applies.
Contributions over 25 years ≈ PKR 666,000 at today's wage base; the pension replaces about 15% of a PKR 120,000 salary.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my EOBI pension so low compared with my salary?
Because contributions and the formula use the minimum wage, not your actual salary. The scheme is a safety net; a provident fund or gratuity makes up the rest.
Can I get EOBI if I changed jobs?
Yes — the record follows your CNIC/EOBI number across employers. Gaps where an employer did not contribute do not count; check your record and ask the employer to regularise.
What if I have 10 years of contributions at retirement?
You receive an old-age grant (lump sum) instead of a pension: roughly one month's insurable wage for each year of service.
Is EOBI pension taxable?
Pensions received from an approved fund are exempt from income tax in Pakistan.
How much is EOBI pension per month?
The minimum is PKR 11,500 as most recently reported; the formula gives wage base × 2% × years, so 25 years on PKR 37,000 is PKR 18,500.
What is the EOBI contribution rate?
5% of the minimum wage from the employer and 1% from the employee, monthly.
