How UAE annual leave accrues
Under Article 29 of the UAE Labour Law, full-time employees accrue paid annual leave as follows:
- First 6 months: no leave accrues.
- 6 to 12 months: 2 calendar days of leave for each month worked.
- After 1 full year of service: 30 calendar days of leave per year (roughly 2.5 days per month).
If you leave the company with unused leave days, you are entitled to be paid for them — this is often called "leave salary" or "leave encashment".
Assumptions
- No leave accrues in the first six months; two days per month from month 6 to 12; 30 days per year after one year.
- Leave value is basic salary ÷ 30 per day.
- Days already taken are subtracted from the accrued total.
- Contractual leave above the statutory minimum is not modelled.
Worked example
First 6 months: 0 days
Months 6–12: 6 × 2 = 12 days
Months 12–18 (6 months): 6 × 2.5 = 15 days
Total accrued: 27 days − 5 taken = 22 days remaining
Daily wage = 9,000 ÷ 30 = AED 300 → value ≈ AED 6,600

Is leave salary based on basic or total salary?
Most employers calculate it on basic wage, in line with how gratuity is calculated — but some contracts specify total salary including allowances. Check your employment contract.
What happens to unused leave if I resign?
You are entitled to be paid for any accrued, unused annual leave days as part of your final settlement.
Can my employer refuse to let me take leave?
Employers can schedule leave according to business needs, but cannot deny statutory annual leave altogether.
Can my employer carry my leave forward or cash it out?
Unused leave may be carried forward or paid out only under conditions set by the law and your contract; on termination, accrued unused leave must be paid.
Is leave salary based on basic or full salary?
The law refers to basic wage for leave-related payments in most cases; some contracts and free-zone regulations use total salary. Check your contract.
