In short
Iqama renewal is done by the sponsor via Absher or Muqeem after paying the levy and fee, and is commonly reported as available up to 90 days before expiry. Late renewal is commonly reported to cost SAR 500 the first time, SAR 1,000 the second and deportation the third. UAE residence visas have a 30-day grace period, then AED 50 per day.
Who this is for: Expatriates in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and the HR/PRO staff who renew Iqamas, visas and Emirates IDs for them.
Iqama renewal, grace periods and fines
- Saudi Iqama: the sponsor (employer) renews it through Absher or Muqeem after paying the annual work-permit levy, the Iqama fee and any dependent levy. Renewal is commonly reported as available up to 3 months before expiry. Renewing after expiry carries a fine commonly reported as SAR 500 for the first offence and SAR 1,000 for the second, with deportation on the third; an expired Iqama also blocks bank accounts, SIM cards, exit/re-entry visas and Absher services.
- UAE residence visa: after expiry there is a 30-day grace period, then an overstay fine of AED 50 per day (unified in October 2022). Renewal requires a valid passport and, for employees, the employer's labour card process.
- Emirates ID: must be renewed within 30 days of expiry; the late fine is AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000.
- Passport: Saudi Arabia, the UAE and most other countries expect at least six months' validity on arrival, and airlines enforce it at check-in. Iqama renewal itself is commonly reported to require at least 90 days of passport validity.
The Iqama expiry printed on the card is a Hijri date; Absher shows the Gregorian equivalent, or convert it with our Hijri ↔ Gregorian converter. Dates here are counted in Gregorian days.
Assumptions
- Days are counted in Gregorian calendar days between the 'count from' date (default today) and the expiry date.
- Renewal windows, fines and grace periods come from the Saudi rules file and are marked as commonly reported, not primary-verified.
- The UAE overstay fine is AED 50/day after a 30-day grace period; Emirates ID late fee AED 20/day capped at AED 1,000.
Worked example
Days remaining = 274 (about 9 months). The commonly reported 90-day renewal window opens on 1 April 2027. Status: valid, no action yet — but the passport must still have 90+ days validity on the renewal date, so a passport expiring before October 2027 should be renewed first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my Iqama myself?
No — only the sponsor (employer, or the head of family for dependents) can renew through Absher Business or Muqeem, after paying the fees. Domestic workers are renewed by the individual sponsor's Absher account.
Can I renew the Iqama for less than a year?
Yes — since 2021 sponsors can renew for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, paying the levy for that period only.
What happens if I travel while my Iqama is about to expire?
An exit/re-entry visa cannot extend beyond the Iqama expiry date, and re-entry is refused on an expired Iqama. Renew first, then apply for the visa.
How is the Hijri expiry date converted?
Absher and Muqeem display both calendars. Our Hijri ↔ Gregorian converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the one Saudi government systems use.
What is the fine for expired Iqama in Saudi Arabia?
Commonly reported as SAR 500 for a first late renewal, SAR 1,000 for a second and deportation for a third — confirm on Absher, as penalties change.
How many days before expiry can Iqama be renewed?
Renewal is commonly reported as available up to 3 months (90 days) before expiry, provided the levy and fees are paid and the passport has enough validity.
