Quick checks

In short

ZUGFeRD and Factur-X are PDF/A-3 invoices with an embedded CII XML file; XRechnung is Germany's pure-XML format (UBL or CII) required for public-sector invoices; Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 is the UBL profile used across the Peppol network. All implement the European norm EN 16931, so one viewer can read them all.

Who this is for: Accounts teams and developers who receive ZUGFeRD, Factur-X, XRechnung or Peppol e-invoices and need to read them without special software.

Not tax or legal advice. A read-only viewer with basic sanity checks. It does not perform full schema or schematron validation, and does not certify compliance with EN 16931, XRechnung or Peppol rules.

ZUGFeRD, Factur-X, XRechnung, Peppol — what's the difference?

  • XRechnung — Germany's mandatory format for invoices to public bodies (and increasingly B2B). Pure XML, in either UBL or CII syntax, with a required Leitweg-ID buyer reference.
  • ZUGFeRD / Factur-X — the same standard under German and French names: a normal PDF/A-3 with the CII XML embedded inside it, so humans read the PDF and software reads the XML. Profiles run from MINIMUM to EXTENDED; the XRECHNUNG profile makes it B2G-compliant.
  • Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 — the UBL profile used across the Peppol network (EU, UK, Singapore, Australia and — from 2027 — the UAE's PINT AE variant).

All of them implement the European norm EN 16931, which is why one viewer can read them all. This tool extracts the core fields and runs basic arithmetic checks; it does not replace a full schematron validation.

Assumptions

  • Reads UBL 2.1 Invoice/CreditNote and CII CrossIndustryInvoice XML, and extracts the XML attachment from a PDF using pdf.js.
  • Shows header, party, line and total fields; runs arithmetic checks only, not schema or schematron validation.
  • Nothing is uploaded.

Worked example

Supplier sends a Factur-X PDF

Drop the PDF in: the viewer finds the embedded factur-x.xml, reports the profile (e.g. urn:cen.eu:en16931:2017#compliant#urn:factur-x.eu:1p0:en16931), lists the seller, buyer, lines and totals, and confirms net + tax = gross.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my ZUGFeRD PDF say 'no embedded XML'?

Either it's an ordinary PDF that only looks like an invoice, or the XML was stripped when the file was re-saved or printed to PDF. Ask the sender for the original.

Does this validate against EN 16931?

No — it checks structure and arithmetic only. For legal validation use KoSIT's validator (XRechnung) or a Peppol-accredited validator.

Can I convert PDF to XRechnung here?

No. Creating a compliant e-invoice needs invoicing software or a service provider; this tool is read-only.

Is XRechnung mandatory for B2B in Germany?

Germany's B2B e-invoicing mandate started in 2025 with a duty to receive; the duty to issue phases in for larger companies from 2027 and all from 2028.

What is a Leitweg-ID?

The routing identifier German public bodies require in the buyer reference field of an XRechnung; without it the invoice is rejected.
