In short

The 50/30/20 rule splits take-home pay into 50% needs (housing, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments), 30% wants and 20% savings and extra debt repayment. On 4,500 a month that is 2,250 / 1,350 / 900; in high-rent cities 60/20/20 is a common variant, and the savings line should never be zero.

Who this is for: Anyone setting up a simple monthly budget from take-home pay.

Not tax or legal advice. A budgeting guideline; the right split depends on your housing costs, debts and goals.

The 50/30/20 rule

  • 50% needs — what you must pay to live and work: housing, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments, childcare.
  • 30% wants — everything optional: restaurants, streaming, holidays, gadgets, gym, gifts.
  • 20% savings — emergency fund first, then retirement and investments, then extra debt repayment.
  • Grey areas: a car payment is a need, a more expensive car than you need is partly a want; a phone is a need, the flagship model is a want.
  • Variants: 60/20/20 for high-rent cities, 50/20/30 for aggressive savers, 70/20/10 when income is tight — the savings line should never be zero.
  • Popularised by Elizabeth Warren in All Your Worth; it is a starting framework, not a law.

Assumptions

  • Amounts = income × split percentages, which must total 100.
  • Actual split = entered spending ÷ income; unaccounted = income − entered total.
  • Adjustments compare each actual line with its plan amount.

Worked example

Take-home 4,500 a month; currently spending 2,600 on needs, 1,200 on wants, saving 400

Plan: 2,250 needs / 1,350 wants / 900 savings. Actual split 58 / 27 / 9 with 300 unaccounted for. Needs are 350 over, savings 500 short — moving 150 of wants and the 300 of untracked spending to savings would get close. At plan, savings reach 10,800 a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50/30/20 before or after tax?

After tax — take-home pay. Pre-tax pension contributions count towards the 20%.

What if my rent alone is 50% of income?

Use 60/20/20 or 70/20/10 for now and keep the savings line alive; the rule is a direction, and housing cost relative to income is the thing to fix over time.

Does debt repayment count as savings?

Minimum payments are needs; anything above the minimum is savings, because it increases your net worth.

Is 20% savings enough?

It is a sound default; aim higher if you started late or want to retire early (the FIRE calculator shows what a higher rate buys).

How do I split 5,000 a month with 50/30/20?

2,500 needs, 1,500 wants, 1,000 savings.

What counts as a need vs a want?

A need is what you must pay to live and work; a want is anything you could stop tomorrow without real hardship. Upgrades on needs are wants.
