Sales tax in Pakistan — federal vs provincial

The federal sales tax on goods (often called GST) is charged at a standard rate of 18% under the Sales Tax Act 1990, with reduced, fixed and zero rates for specific items. Sales tax on services is a provincial matter — Punjab (PRA), Sindh (SRB), KP (KPRA) and Balochistan (BRA) each set their own rates, commonly in the 13–16% range, with reduced rates for certain services.

To extract tax from an inclusive price: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). To add it: gross = net × (1 + rate).

Net = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = PKR 10,000; sales tax = PKR 1,800.

Frequently asked questions

Is 18% always correct?

No — it's the standard goods rate. Many items carry reduced or fixed rates, and services use provincial rates. Check the current schedule for your item.

Can I claim input tax?

Registered persons can generally adjust input tax against output tax subject to FBR rules — a matter for your accountant.

Does this cover further tax or extra tax?

No. Additional levies on unregistered buyers or specific sectors are not modelled.

Do I charge federal or provincial sales tax?

Goods attract federal sales tax (FBR); services attract provincial sales tax in the province where the service is provided.

Is there sales tax on exports?

Exports of goods are zero-rated, so no tax is charged but input tax can be claimed.
