In short
Saudi Labor Law Article 109 gives at least 21 days of paid annual leave a year, rising to 30 days after five consecutive years with the employer; leave accrues pro rata and any untaken balance is paid out at the end of service at the daily wage (monthly wage ÷ 30) under Article 111.
Who this is for: Employees in Saudi Arabia checking leave balance and encashment value, and HR teams settling leave at end of service.
Annual leave under the Saudi Labor Law
- Article 109: at least 21 days of paid annual leave per year, rising to 30 days once the employee has completed five consecutive years with the same employer. Leave is paid in advance at the wage in force when it is taken.
- Article 110: the employer sets the dates according to work needs, with at least 30 days' notice; leave cannot be waived for cash while employed, but with the employer's agreement it may be deferred to the following year.
- Article 111: on leaving, the employee is paid for all accrued leave not taken, including the pro-rata part of the current year — this is the "leave encashment" line in a final settlement, alongside the end-of-service benefit.
- Public holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, National Day, Founding Day) are in addition to annual leave.
Accrual here is straight-line: entitlement × months served ÷ 12. Many employers give 30 days from the start by contract; enter the contractual figure if yours is higher than the statutory minimum.

Assumptions
- Entitlement 21 days, or 30 after 5 completed years, or the contractual figure if higher; accrual is straight-line within the service year.
- Available = accrued − taken + carried over; cash value = available × wage ÷ 30.
- Service measured in days ÷ 365.25 from the joining date to the as-of date.
Worked example
Service = 2.75 years; entitlement 21 days. Accrued this service year = 21 × 0.749 = 15.7 days; less 10 taken = 5.7 days available.
Daily wage = SAR 266.67 → encashment value SAR 1,527. The 30-day entitlement starts on 1 January 2029.
Frequently asked questions
Can my employer refuse to carry over unused leave?
Leave is meant to be taken in the year it accrues, but it cannot be forfeited: unused days are either carried over by agreement or paid out at the end of service. An employer cannot simply cancel them.
Is leave encashment based on basic or full salary?
The Labor Law uses 'wage', which includes basic salary plus fixed allowances (housing, transport). Many employers pay encashment on basic only — check your contract; the law's reading favours the full wage.
Does the 30-day entitlement apply from year 5 or year 6?
After completing five consecutive years, i.e. from the start of the sixth year of service.
Does unpaid leave or sick leave affect accrual?
Sick leave counts as service. Long unpaid leave is normally excluded from the accrual period by agreement.
How many annual leave days in Saudi Arabia?
21 days a year by law, rising to 30 days after five consecutive years of service; many contracts give 30 from the start.
Is unused leave paid at the end of service in Saudi Arabia?
Yes — Article 111 requires all accrued, untaken leave to be paid at the wage rate when the contract ends.
