How bank profit and withholding tax work

Pakistani banks pay profit on PLS savings accounts (a declared, variable rate) and on term deposits (usually fixed for the tenure). Profit is paid monthly, quarterly or at maturity depending on the product. The bank deducts withholding tax on profit at source under Section 151 of the Income Tax Ordinance — a lower rate for persons on the Active Taxpayer List and a much higher rate for non-filers.

This tool uses simple (non-compounding) monthly profit: deposit × annual rate ÷ 12. If your product reinvests profit, the actual return is slightly higher.

Assumptions

  • Profit is simple, non-compounding: deposit × annual rate ÷ 12 per month.
  • Withholding tax is 15% (filer) or 35% (non-filer) as marked in the rules file (unverified).
  • Zakat deduction is not modelled.

Worked example

PKR 1,000,000 at 12%, filer, 12 months

Gross monthly = 1,000,000 × 12% ÷ 12 = PKR 10,000
Withholding (15%) = PKR 1,500 → net PKR 8,500/month, PKR 102,000 over the year.

Frequently asked questions

Is the withholding tax final?

For many individuals it is treated as a final or minimum tax on profit on debt up to certain thresholds — above those, profit is taxed under normal rates. Ask a tax consultant.

Why is my bank's rate different from the policy rate?

Banks set deposit rates below the SBP policy rate, with a regulated minimum on PLS savings accounts. Term deposits usually pay more than savings accounts.

Does Zakat get deducted too?

Zakat is deducted on eligible savings accounts on 1 Ramadan unless you file an exemption declaration — not modelled here.

What is the difference between a savings account and a TDR?

Savings accounts pay a variable declared rate with instant access; term deposits (TDRs) lock funds for a period at a fixed rate, usually higher.

Is bank profit halal?

Islamic banks offer profit-and-loss-sharing accounts structured as mudarabah; conventional accounts pay interest. The arithmetic here is the same for both.
