In short

A required minimum distribution = last year's 31 December balance ÷ the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table divisor for your age (26.5 at 73, 24.6 at 75, 20.2 at 80, 12.2 at 90). RMDs start at 73 for those who turned 72 after 2022 and at 75 for anyone born in 1960 or later; the first can be delayed to 1 April of the next year. Missing one costs a 25% excise tax (10% if corrected within two years). A $650,000 balance at 75 requires about $26,423.

Who this is for: US retirees and heirs with traditional IRAs or 401(k)s at or near RMD age.

Not tax or legal advice. Federal rules for account owners; inherited-account and beneficiary rules differ. Tax estimate uses the rate you enter.

Required minimum distributions

  • Who: owners of traditional IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k), 403(b) and other workplace plans. Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMD; Roth 401(k)s no longer do either (from 2024).
  • When: starting at age 73 (if you reached 72 after 2022), rising to 75 for those born in 1960 or later. The first RMD can be delayed to 1 April of the following year; every later one is due by 31 December.
  • How much: prior-year-end balance ÷ the divisor for your age from the Uniform Lifetime Table (26.5 at 73, 24.6 at 75, 20.2 at 80, 12.2 at 90). A spouse beneficiary more than 10 years younger uses the Joint Life Table, giving a smaller RMD.
  • Multiple accounts: IRAs can be aggregated and the total taken from any one; 401(k)s must each pay their own.
  • Penalty: 25% excise tax on any shortfall, 10% if corrected within two years.
  • Tax: ordinary income. A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) sent directly to charity counts towards the RMD and is excluded from income.

Assumptions

  • RMD = prior-year-end balance ÷ Uniform Lifetime Table divisor for this year's age (or an entered Joint Life divisor).
  • Starting age 73, or 75 for birth years 1960+; no RMD below the starting age.
  • Projection: balance less RMD grown at the return, next year's divisor applied; penalty = 25% of shortfall (10% if corrected).

Worked example

$650,000 IRA balance on 31 December, age 75 this year, born 1951, 5% return, 22% tax

Divisor 24.6 → RMD $26,423 (4.07% of the balance), about $2,200 a month, due 31 December. Tax at 22% about $5,813. If missed, the excise tax would be $6,606 (25%). Projection: at age 80 the balance is about $663,000 and the RMD about $32,800; at 85 about $40,000 — the percentage rises every year while the balance slowly declines.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do RMDs start?

73 for people who turned 72 after 2022; 75 for anyone born in 1960 or later. The first one can be delayed to 1 April of the following year.

How is the RMD calculated?

Last year's 31 December balance divided by the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table divisor for your age this year — 26.5 at 73, 24.6 at 75, 20.2 at 80.

Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?

Not for the original owner; inherited Roth IRAs do have distribution rules for beneficiaries.

Can I take more than the minimum?

Yes, any amount — but excess withdrawals do not count towards future years.

Can I take my RMD from one IRA?

Yes — IRAs are aggregated and the total can come from any of them; each 401(k) must distribute its own.

What is a qualified charitable distribution?

A transfer of up to $108,000 (2026) straight from an IRA to charity after age 70½; it satisfies the RMD and is excluded from income.
