Social Security Claiming Age Calculator

Compare two Social Security claiming ages: monthly benefit at each (early reduction and delayed credits), nominal and discounted break-even age, lifetime benefits to any life expectancy with COLA, and the survivor-benefit effect.

✅ Figures verified. Early-retirement reduction (5/9 of 1% per month for 36 months, 5/12 beyond), delayed retirement credits (8% a year to 70) and full retirement age 67 for those born 1960 or later are statutory SSA rules — checked 8 October 2026.

In short

Claiming at 62 pays 70% of your full-retirement-age benefit (FRA 67); waiting to 70 pays 124% — 77% more per month for life, plus COLAs on the larger base. The nominal break-even between 62 and 70 is around age 80; a discounted break-even is a few years later. Delaying also raises a surviving spouse's benefit, so couples usually delay the higher earner's claim.

Who this is for: Americans aged 55–70 deciding when to start Social Security, and couples planning the higher earner's claim.

  • Break-even between 62 and 70 is typically around age 80–81 in nominal terms, later once you count a return on the early benefits. Average life expectancy at 65 is in the mid-80s, and higher for healthy, higher-income people — which is why many planners favour delaying, at least for the higher earner in a couple.
  • Reasons to claim early: poor health, no other income, a lower-earning spouse whose own benefit is the household's secondary one.
  • Reasons to delay: longevity in the family, still working (the earnings test before FRA), locking in the survivor benefit, the 8% guaranteed real increase.
  • Delayed credits stop at 70 — never wait beyond it.

Assumptions

  • Early reduction 5/9% a month for the first 36 months and 5/12% beyond; delayed credits 2/3% a month to age 70.
  • COLA applied annually from the first claim; discounted break-even uses the real discount rate you enter.
  • Earnings test and taxation of benefits are not modelled.

Worked example

$2,400 FRA benefit, FRA 67, comparing 62 vs 70, 2.5% COLA, 2% real discount, to age 85

Claim at 62: $1,680 a month (70%); claim at 70: $2,976 (124%) — 77% more. Nominal break-even at 80 years 5 months; with a 2% real return on the early benefits about 82 years 9 months. Living to 85, the early claimer collects about $463,700 and the late claimer $535,700 — about $72,000 more for waiting, and the survivor benefit is $2,976 instead of $1,680.

Frequently asked questions

What is the break-even age for Social Security?

Roughly 80 for 62 vs 70 with a full retirement age of 67; about 78–79 for 62 vs 67. Beyond that, the later claim pays more in total.

How much does Social Security increase each year you wait?

About 6–7% a year before full retirement age (reversing the reduction) and 8% a year from FRA to 70, plus annual COLAs on top.

Can I work and collect at 62?

Yes, but before full retirement age $1 is withheld for every $2 earned above the annual limit (the withheld months are credited back later).

Does claiming early reduce my spouse's survivor benefit?

Yes — the survivor receives the deceased's actual benefit, so a reduced early claim is inherited as reduced.

Is the break-even age different for couples?

Usually the higher earner should delay — the larger benefit becomes the survivor benefit for whichever spouse lives longer, which extends the effective payback period.

Does the 8% delayed credit compound?

No, it is simple — 2/3% per month on the full benefit — but COLAs apply to the larger amount every year.
