In short
Whole life costs 8–15 times a term policy for the same death benefit because most of the premium builds cash value at a guaranteed 2–4%. Buying term and investing the difference at 5–7% typically exceeds the guaranteed cash value by year 20–30; whole life wins on guarantees, tax-free loans, permanent coverage and forced saving. Compare guaranteed, not illustrated, cash values and the return the side fund needs to match them.
Who this is for: US families being pitched whole life who want to see the numbers against term plus investing.
Term vs whole life: the honest comparison
- Term: pure insurance for 10–30 years; premiums for a healthy 35-year-old run about $25–45 a month per $500,000 of 30-year coverage. Nothing back if you outlive it — that is the point.
- Whole life: permanent coverage plus a cash-value account; premiums of $400–600 a month for the same $500,000. Cash value grows tax-deferred, can be borrowed against, and the death benefit never expires.
- Buy term and invest the difference: put the premium gap into index funds or retirement accounts. At 6% the side fund usually exceeds the guaranteed cash value by year 20–30; at 3–4% whole life's guarantees are competitive.
- What whole life does better: guarantees, tax-free access via loans, creditor protection in many states, coverage that cannot lapse with health changes, estate liquidity.
- What to check on an illustration: guaranteed vs non-guaranteed columns, the surrender charge schedule (cash value is tiny for the first 5–10 years), dividend assumptions and the internal rate of return by year.

Assumptions
- Side fund = monthly premium difference compounded monthly at the return for the term, then the full whole-life premium saved after the term ends.
- Cash value interpolated between the year-20 and year-30 figures you enter.
- Implied return = rate at which whole-life premiums would grow to the cash value; break-even = rate the side fund needs to equal the cash value.
Worked example
The $415 monthly difference invested at 6% grows to about $404,000 over 30 years, against a guaranteed cash value of $170,000 — term + investing is ahead by about $234,000. Whole life's implied return on premiums is only about 0.3% a year if surrendered for cash value, and the side fund would need to earn just 0.85% to match it. If death occurs in year 30, term + side fund leaves about $904,000 versus $500,000; after the term expires, the $404,000 fund becomes the self-insurance.
Frequently asked questions
Is whole life insurance worth it?
For most households no — term covers the need at a fraction of the cost and the difference invested outgrows the cash value. It can make sense for permanent needs (estate tax, lifelong dependants, business succession) once tax-advantaged accounts are full.
How much more does whole life cost than term?
Typically 8–15 times the term premium for the same death benefit at the same age.
What return does whole life cash value earn?
Guaranteed rates of about 2–4%; participating policies with dividends have historically delivered 4–5% over 30+ years — tax-deferred, but low early on because of surrender charges.
What happens when term insurance expires?
Coverage ends (or renews at steep annual rates); by then the mortgage is usually paid, children grown and savings built — the side fund replaces the need.
What about indexed or variable universal life?
IUL and VUL offer market-linked cash value with caps and fees; compare their guaranteed columns and internal costs the same way, and be sceptical of illustrated 6–8% returns.
Can I convert term to whole life later?
Most term policies include a conversion option without new underwriting for a set period — useful if your health changes.
